Hong Kong Friends Gala Dinner 2018
In April 2018, The Hong Kong Friends of Winchester College (HKFWC) were delighted to welcome the Winchester College Chamber Orchestra’s inaugural tour to Hong Kong, accompanied by the HM and member of the Governing Body, Nick Ferguson CBE (C, 1961 – 66). The activities were organised by the HKFWC Events Committee who worked hard to ensure a busy and successful week which included a Gala Dinner with captivating performances by members of the Orchestra, a concert in St John’s Cathedral, a performance for children at the Ebenezer School and Home for the Visually Impaired, and an OW Guild lunch, which gave guests the opportunity to hear about developments at the School.

Hots were held……

in Delhi: on 10 March 2015, 24 members of the Wykehamical community joined former Director of Win Coll Soc, David Fellowes (I, 1963 – 67) and the Deputy Director of Development, Tamara Templer, at a gathering in Delhi at The Claridges. The drinks reception and dinner were generously sponsored by Bhanu Singh (A, 1989 – 94), who had also done much to encourage attendance, including OWs and past, current and even prospective parents. It was a wonderful evening of reminiscing, rounded off in with a hot on the lawn in front of the hotel.

and in Mumbai: The following evening 14 gathered at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai for a second dinner, generously sponsored by OW Rohit Poddar (E, 1987 – 89) and past parents Rustam and Lia Gagrat. This venue was particularly apt as photographs were in evidence of at least two eminent cricketing OWs: Douglas Jardine (C, 1914 – 19) and Tiger Pataudi (I, 1954 – 59). Not to be outdone by their counterparts in Delhi, a second hot, smaller but no less energetic, was held on the [Test] cricket ground, under the cover of darkness!

Footnote from the archives: the first overseas OW Dinner on record took place in India on 16th September 1887, in Simla. The first to be held in [then] Bombay was in 1930 and in Delhi in 1932. General Sir Archibald Wavell, then C-in-C Far East, reporting to the Headmaster on an OW dinner he had given in Delhi in 1942, wrote: ‘An attempt to send you a telegram of greeting was defeated by the Indian censor, who ruled Latin inadmissible!’, whilst as Viceroy, he gave another dinner at the Viceroy’s House in Delhi, on 11th March 1944, on which occasion 31 OWs were dined ‘in the Mughal Garden among the dwarf orange trees’.

Hong Kong Friends Gala Dinner 2014

The Wykehamical community is certainly alive and well in Hong Kong!

The Hong Kong Friends Events Committee, comprising OWs and current parents and with support from Winchester College Society, once again hosted a wonderful fundraising Gala Dinner.  On Thursday 3 April 2014 over 200 people gathered at the Hong Kong Country Club in support of Music at Winchester. The Headmaster and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Friends of Winchester College, Dr the Hon Sir David K P Li, joined the OWs and parents, current, past and prospective, for an evening of musical performances and discussion. Accompanied by Dr Nicholas Salwey, the Deputy Master of Music, five Wykehamists entertained the audience with performances on the piano, cello, flute and violin. This was complemented by a panel discussion with OWs, hosted by Kevin Ching, talking about their time at Winchester and the influence that music had on their lives.

OW Hong Kong Business Guild Dinner 2013

On the 22 April, Paul Tao (I, 1980 – 85) hosted an excellent dinner to launch the OW Hong Kong Business Guild. Thirty-one OWs, Lorna Stoddart and Tamara Templer (respectively Director and Deputy Director of Development) gathered at the Hong Kong Club to discuss how the Guild concept might work in HK and to consider the next step. Paul has agreed to be the Chairman of the Business Guild Committee and will be joined by Terris Tang (E, 1996 – 01), KY Hung (D, 1995 – 00) and Ben Powell
(C, 1993 – 98).

Hong Kong Golf Day 2013

This year, The Hong Kong Events Committee hosted a fabulous Golf Day on April 19, for current parents, Old Wykehamists and prospective parents, at the beautiful Shek O Golf and Country Club.

Nearly 30 players gathered to tee-off in the afternoon sunshine, after which the competitive spirit took hold! Following the tournament prize-giving, a hundred guests, including current Wykehamists, gathered for dinner in the Club House. Parent, Kevin Ching, hosted a question-and-answer panel, which provided three boys with the opportunity to demonstrate the undoubted benefit of a Wykehamical education!

The aim of the evening was to learn more about the School, to meet other parents and to re-connect with old friends. Mission most definitely accomplished!
