Friends Event: David Fellowes
The Story of War Cloister

Saturday, October 2, 2021 12:30 - 13:30

The Story of War Cloister
by David Fellowes (I, 1963-67 and, inter alia, Director of The Friends - 2004-12)

Long before being accorded Grade 1 listed status in 2017, War Cloister was recognised as being of ‘national importance’. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker after the First War, the cloister is said by Historic England to be the largest private war memorial in Europe. It stands complementary to, but does not challenge, the original, medieval Cloister of Wykeham’s day, standing peerless on the other side of Meads.

David’s story tells of much wrangling among the Memorial Committee, of a famous Dinner in Amiens in November 1917, not far from the front and yet attended by the Headmaster, and includes some emotional passages, so you may wish to follow David’s example by bringing your handkerchief!
