Florence and the Birth of the Italian Renaissance

In the second half of the 14th century, Florence was a city recovering from the ravages of the Black Death and war. The city elders, in control of the city at a time of resurgent economy, decided to enter into competition with their arch rivals and neighbours, Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Prato and Arezzo, cities that had already built and decorated magnificent cathedrals. This sudden burst of energy, coupled with an explosion of interest in ancient texts, and a rise in an understanding of a new philosophy called ‘Humanism’ created what we now call the ‘Italian Renaissance’. The combination of talented artists - Giotto, Donatello, Alberti, Ghiberti, Botticelli, Verocchio, Leonardo and Michelangelo -  and banking families prepared to finance them, and a cultural and artistic movement was born
