Friends Event - Everest Evening

Wednesday, December 1, 2021 18:30 - 20:00

A candlelit tour of Cloister, a glass of wine, and a short a capella concert by Cantores Episcopi, followed by a Q&A session on the Everest expeditions with Bill Norton (H, 1946 – 51) and Adam Rattray

Bill is the surviving son of Lt. Col ‘Teddy’ Norton, leader of the 1924 Everest expedition.

In 1924, Colonel Norton reached 28,120 ft., a world altitude record that would last until 1952, and a height record of climbing without oxygen that was only broken in 1978. He was amongst the last to see Mallory and Irvine alive.

Bill will talk to us about his father’s climbing career, and the British Mount Everest expeditions of 1921, 1922 and 1924. He will explain the ‘Norton route’, and why his father Teddy had to turn back a tantalising 912 feet from the summit.
