A Message from the Headmaster

Common Room Side View Summer ShotThis is a challenging time for everyone. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect us all in different ways, one thing remains constant – our need to stay connected has never been greater.

The Headmaster has written a letter, which can be read here, updating you on life at Winchester, explaining how the school has reacted to the pandemic and our plans for next term. Of course there is constant change. The most up to date information can be found on the school website.

We want to continue talking to you.

The Wykeham Journal

Wykeham Journal 2019

The latest edition of the WJ, guest edited by Rupert Younger (F, 1979 - 84) is now available to read online. You can also download a pdf version. If you normally receive a hard copy, we are hoping it will be with you by the end of April. The Headmaster wrote the covering letter in January, well before the impact of the virus was fully understood. However one thing still remains true, which is the importance of community at this uncertain time. If you would like to support the school, donations can be made online. Information about alternative ways to give can be found here.

Kingsgate Park Update

As we know, the situation is continually changing. However we want to make sure we keep you updated on the new Sports Centre project. This March report, written before lockdown, gives you the short term update on progress. Many generous donors are supporting this project. We will of course inform you of any significant changes to the project or timeline.

A Thought for the Day

St George and the DragonFor the last week of term, the Headmaster wanted our scattered community to cohere around a “thought for the day”. This took the form of a piece of Div material; a poem, a passage of prose, a work of art, a piece of music - which the whole school could focus on. All of these can be found on twitter. The Head of Art History, Adam Rattray, told us about Paolo Uccello's 15th century painting of St. George and the Dragon
He enouraged us all to make the most of this time to explore the treaures of the world from the comfort of our own homes!

And Finally ...

It is with regret that we have had to cancel some events and postpone others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the situation is over and life has returned to normal, we will in the fullness of time replan our events and advise you of when these are taking place. In the meantime, as the Headmaster has outlined in his message, we are planning to keep you updated on life at Winchester, however it may be. Do keep an eye on twitter, where you will find out how the school is supporting the local community. We are all working remotely, picking up phone messages and replying to emails. As always, we look forward to hearing from you with your news and views.

Happy Easter.

Here's to better times!
