Winchester is embarking upon probably the most comprehensive development plan since its foundation. As part of the Southern Campus Development, the school's sporting facilities, based at Kingsgate Park, will undergo a significant transformation and improvement over the next couple of years.

At Winchester Match 2019 the Headmaster launched the start of the new Sports Centre Project. As part of the celebrations and in recognition of past sporting triumphs, with the knowledge of many more to come, graffiti artist Will Impey created large scale murals of our Gold Medal Olympians. Will worked in collaboration with Junior Part who produced posters of their sporting heroes, which were used as a backdrop to the images and emblazoned across the exterior walls of the current PE Centre.

Back in the 1960s when the existing PE Centre was built, the school was home to 550 boys, with a small selection of football and cricket teams and a handful of additional sports on offer. Today we have 700 boys and a diverse range of more than 30 sports to choose from.

The new sporting facilities will deliver a centre of sporting excellence that:

  • will enable the most talented and driven boys to reach their full potential within the sporting arena, just as they do in the academic field

  • will ensure that everybody can find a sport they enjoy and take it forward to the level that suits them

  • benefits a school of Winchester's standing.

As with all projects of this size, it will be financed by a mixture of borrowing, the school's own funds and fundraising.

Over the last couple of years, donors have been approached who might consider giving a lead gift. The philanthropy of the community knows no bounds, and we have been supported in this effort by a campaign committee, with members based in the UK, USA, and in Hong Kong.

The fundraising target is £20 million and thanks to the generosity of parents and Old Wykehamists we have raised £18.6 million in cash and pledges. The more we can raise in support of this project, the more we can protect both the existing endowment, which pays for the current bursary programme, and the proceeds of Barton Farm development, which is ring-fenced for the expansion of the bursary provision. Bursary provision remains a top priority for Winchester.
