The Shedden Bursary Fund for Quiristers

The aim of the appeal is to raise £1,500,000 in support of the Shedden Bursary Fund for Quiristers, which has been established thanks to the generosity of a number of donors. The Fund will ensure that this wonderful and unique choral education is available to those who will best profit from it, irrespective of financial background.

To date we have secured £1,264,000 in income and pledges.

Please help us to raise the final £236,000 needed to reach our target and ensure that each year there is sufficient income to meet the cost of bursary provision.

Q Recording 2017

                                                                                Q Recording 2017

When William of Wykeham founded Winchester College in 1382 he made provision for 16 boys called Quiristers to sing the Chapel services. The school has maintained its mediaeval choral foundation for more than 630 years and today this lies at the heart of a flourishing choral tradition, noted for its excellence and diversity.

Today the 16 Quiristers, aged between 8 and 13, are educated at The Pilgrims’ School, in Winchester Cathedral close, where they receive an excellent all-round prep school education. No other independent senior school in England retains its ancient choral foundation in this way.

A choral education provides the student with a sense of community, pride, discipline and confidence and, of course, a musical knowledge and appreciation which will last a lifetime.

Further information on Quiristers can be read here.

The College is committed to maintaining the ancient choral foundation and is supporting each Quirister with a 40% contribution towards their education at The Pilgrim’s School. In addition, the Governing Body would like to ensure that any capable boy can benefit from a choral education, irrespective of his parents' financial background.
