Some of our readers might have noted the 960th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings earlier this week. We noted the Wykehamical take on the Bayeux Tapestry in our last edition (the mural in Thule).
Trafalgar Day also falls in October, next week on 21 October. To mark the centenary of Nelson's victory, College based their 1905 Hot Roll around a warship with the names of the players inscribed on the sails of the foremast.
They seem to be arranged in playing order. Therefore (at the risk of prompting a sackful of post): the kicks are on the royal and topgallant sails; the hot men on the topsail; and the hotwatches on the topsail studding sails.
The full roll reads as follows, with links to Winchester College at War.

To mark the centenary, the school was awarded a Half Rem. The following poem, published in The Wykehamist in November 1905 celebrates the occasion:
Perhaps we're seeking thus to drown
In joy, the sorrow of that day,
When, as he struck the Frenchman down,
Nelson, the hero, passed away.
It was a hundred years ago
That Nelson's signal flew;
And we are wiser now and know
Far more than Nelson knew;
Therefore we keep Trafalgar-day
Not with more duty, but more play.
