There are currently 19 pupils in College who are only here thanks to the generosity of those who came before them. For centuries, philanthropy has ensured that talented pupils, regardless of their financial background, can benefit from a Winchester education. This year alone, the school is providing over £640,000 in bursary support for these Collegemen. With your help, we can ensure that future Collegemen have the same opportunities that you once did.
George Mallory 1900-05
George Mallory was a pioneering English mountaineer, famous for his attempts to summit Mount Everest in the early 1920s. He played a key role in the first three British Everest expeditions (1921, 1922, and 1924), helping map routes and pushing altitude limits. On the 1924 expedition, Mallory and his partner Andrew "Sandy" Irvine vanished near the summit during a final ascent attempt. Whether they reached the top remains unknown. Mallory is famously remembered for his reply when asked why he wanted to climb Everest: "Because it’s there."
