There are currently 14 pupils in Phil's who are only here thanks to the generosity of those who came before them. For centuries, philanthropy has ensured that talented pupils, regardless of their financial background, can benefit from a Winchester education. This year alone, the school is providing over £430,000 in bursary support for these Philites. With your help, we can ensure that future Philites have the same opportunities that you once did.
David Eccles, 1st Viscount Eccles 1918-23
Elected MP for Chippenham in 1943, he served until 1962. He held key positions in Conservative administrations, including Minister of Works, Minister of Education, and President of the Board of Trade. Raised to the peerage as Baron Eccles in 1962 and Viscount Eccles in 1964, he returned as Paymaster-General and Minister for the Arts in 1970, clashing with Arnold Goodman, Chairman of the Arts Council, over controversial plays and exhibitions. He also introduced mandatory admission charges at public museums and galleries.
