The Friends of Winchester College was formed in 1989 with the objective of forming closer bonds between the School, the local community, parents, staff, Wykehamists and past visitors through the arrangement of special events, and by generally encouraging local residents to take part in school activities.
Benefits of Membership
- Invitations to lectures and occasional social events arranged by The Friends.
- Attendance at other school events: plays, concerts, films, Chapel Services - details of which are given in the Friends' termly newsletter.
- Free guided tours of the school, with reduced rates for their guests.
- Above all, perhaps, a feeling of ‘belonging' to an ancient, beautiful and much-admired institution.

Lectures
The Friends offer wide variety of lectures and events throughout the year, ranging from jazz evenings to talks on Milton and Shakespeare. A particular highlight is the Kenneth Clark competition when six boys, chosen out of the entire of the sixth form, present short lectures on artists of their choosing. The standard of performance is remarkably high.
A new feature of the 2020-2021 programme is that we have been given permission (once Covid allows) to hold drinks parties before talks in areas of the College not generally open to the public, for example the dons’ Common Room gardens. This will add much to what we offer, allowing the Friends to meet and enjoy a drink in spectacular surroundings before an event.
