OWCCS Evensong 5th October 2024 St Bartholomew the Great

OW Chapel Choir Soc gathered once again in the ancient church of St Bartholomew the Great in the heart of the City of London on 5 October. This was our second Evensong in London, our fourth in total so far.

Tom Jesty, an old Trantite, led us through the rehearsal in his calm and gentle way, moulding our voices to fill the space with a beautiful sound. As has become customary, we were led by our wonderful soprano guests, some of whom were Winchester Cathedral girl choristers.

The service opened with Stanford's serene Beati quorum via, after which we were roused by Noble's Magnificat in B minor. The singing closed with Brahms's truly spiritual Geistliches Lied. The Revd. Justin White, our preacher in residence, remembered the late Tony Ayres, our Treasurer and Librarian, finding certain parallels with St Francis of Assisi, whose feast day had fallen on the previous day.

As always there was great conviviality over tea, and afterwards at drinks in the church and dinner at Côte St Paul's where we enjoyed good food with plenty of banter. It was wonderful to see so many returning members as well as new ones. The Society has truly come of age and is always open to new members.
